Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. Manufacturer of the iconic ‘Kangaroo’ gold and silver investment coins, Perth Mint also produce a popular lunar series and a range of sought-after collector coins.
Perth Mint has been minting the popular Lunar Series of silver coins since 1999. The coins commemorate the 12-year Chinese Lunar Calendar. The production of the first series of silver coins ended in 2007, after gold coins for Series I of the Lunar Series ran from 1996 to 2007. Perth Mint has been producing its Series II coins since 2008.
The silver coins produced for the Lunar Series are ranging between 1/2 oz for the smallest coin up to a gigantic 10 kg coin. The 2010 Silver Lunar Year of the Tiger features a tiger lying under a tree, and the Chinese character for "tiger".
