Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. Manufacturer of the iconic ‘Kangaroo’ gold and silver investment coins, Perth Mint also produce a popular lunar series and a range of sought-after collector coins.
The 2019 1/10 oz Gold Kangaroo coin is a gold bullion coin produced by Australia's Perth Mint. Each coin weights 0.1 troy ounce and has a gold purity or fineness of 0.9999, i.e. 99.99% pure gold.
The Perth Mint is both a mint and a refinery, and operates one of the largest and best known gold refineries in the world. The Perth Mint's refinery is accredited to the Good Delivery List for gold of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA)
Each year, the kangaroo imagery on the Kangaroo Gold Bullion series of coins changes, which explains its popularity with both collectors and gold investors alike.
For 2019, the obverse of the 1/10 oz gold Kangaroo features a kangaroo standing on a mound of grass with a sun and stylised trees as a backdrop. The imagery is inscribed at the top by the words 'AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO', and includes a ‘P’ mint mark signifying Perth. The obverse also displays the coin's year '2019', weight '1/10 oz', and the coin's purity '9999 GOLD' .
The reverse of the Gold Kangaroo coin features a head portrait of the official head of state of Australia, Queen Elizabeth II, and the coin's official face value of '15 dollars'. Gold Kangaroo bullion coins are non-circulating legal tender in Australia and are issued under the Australian Currency Act of 1965
The Australian Kangaroo gold bullion coin series was first issued in 1990, but is officially called the 'Australian Nugget Kangaroo Gold Bullion Series' since from 1987 to 1989 a similar coin with imagery of famous Australian gold nuggets was issued.
