Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. Manufacturer of the iconic ‘Kangaroo’ gold and silver investment coins, Perth Mint also produce a popular lunar series and a range of sought-after collector coins.
First Proof Issue, only 12,000 minted. The 1986 proof set contained the very first Australian nuggets issued. No bullion versions were issued during this first year, but the designs used on the 1986 proof set were eventually used for all the bullion issues from 1987 to 1989 inclusive, until the design theme changed from gold nuggets to kangaroos and wallabies.
