Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. Manufacturer of the iconic ‘Kangaroo’ gold and silver investment coins, Perth Mint also produce a popular lunar series and a range of sought-after collector coins.
The Australian Gold Nugget is perhaps the most iconic Australian Gold Bullion coin. Starting from 1986 a new design has been produced every year, and the Australian Kangaroo being introduced to the design in 1989. Since then, the Gold Nugget has often been referred to as the Gold Kangaroo. The Australian Gold Kangaroo is one of the few legal tender gold coins worldwide that features a new design every year.

The obverse of the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse portrays a kangaroo leaning down to drink from a gentle stream. Including the inscription ‘THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET’, the reverse incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark as well as the coin’s weight, purity and 2003 year-date.
