Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. Manufacturer of the iconic ‘Kangaroo’ gold and silver investment coins, Perth Mint also produce a popular lunar series and a range of sought-after collector coins.
The Perth Mint introduced their lunar series of coins in 1996. Each cycle lasts 12 years, with each year celebrating a different Chinese zodiac sign. Since the coins were introduced they have proven to be highly collectable, with most sizes selling out quickly.
The lunar Year of the Mouse begins on January 25th, 2020. It is said that those born under this lunar zodiac sign are thought to be kind, smart, thoughtful and quick witted. Other year of the mice (or rat) include 1972, 1984, 1996 and 2008.
Most Australian coinage adopted a new obverse of Queen Elizabeth II in 2019. The lunar series did not use the new portrait and kept the fourth coinage portrait by Ian Rank Broadley instead. This was so the obverse of the coins remained uniform with previous years.
With the start of the third series, the Perth Mint have taken the opportunity to update the obverse of the coins. The 2020 coins showcase the new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. The design shows Elizabeth from the shoulders upwards.
