The Discobolus of Myron is a classic Greek sculpture from the classical period of 460-450 BC. The sculpture shows a young man throwing a discus and is thought to be one of the best renderings of this sport from this period. This statue has long been revered as a fine example of the way in which sculpture can communicate motion and tension. The lines of the athlete’s body seem to communicate a feeling that the sculpture is just about to come to life and finish the action he has begun. This is one of the features of Greek statuary, and this sense of movement and tension is a key factor that is looked for when authenticating these pieces.
