The coin honours games which have been played for many centuries. Playing games was one of the earliest kinds of social contact in human history. They were played as competitive entertainment by ancient civilizations. Dice can be found as throwable cubes with numbered sides, and evidence suggests they have existed since at least 2000 BCE in Egypt.

The coin portrays game-related motifs within a ring of circles. They represent chess, snakes and ladders, terni lapilli, mahjong, draughts (or chequers), knucklebones, backgammon, and dice in clockwise order from the top. The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark and a background pattern are also seen on the reverse. Noughts and crosses, popularly known as tic tac toe, a "three-in-a-row" game, are shown in the coin's centre by a 24-carat-plated stainless steel inlay. This game is thought to have originated from the ancient Roman game terni lapilli (three pebbles).
