AUTHORISED NZ DISTRIBUTOR
Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. Manufacturer of the iconic ‘Kangaroo’ gold and silver investment coins, Perth Mint also produce a popular lunar series and a range of sought-after collector coins.
Production of traditional sovereigns from Western Australian gold was the lifeblood of The Perth Mint in the years up to 1931. One hundred and six million pieces were struck, each bearing Benedetto Pistrucci’s classical St George and the Dragon design and a ‘P’ mintmark.
According to tradition, St George was a Greek-born Roman guard and Christian martyr. Myths grew up around him during the Middle Ages, including an enduring legend in which he saves a princess from a malevolent dragon. Representing courage and the victory of good over evil, St George embodied the qualities of knighthood in medieval chivalry, and was invoked to inspire valour on the battlefield and national pride.
DESIGN
This modern collectable re-imagines the famous design. The new work portrays a naked warrior on horseback brandishing a sword above a dragon. The image appears within a decorative circle of raised dots, together with the inscription ‘AUSTRALIA’, ‘2025’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
PRESENTATION
Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, the coin is housed in a black presentation case featuring a foiled representation of the coin design on the lid, and an intricately illustrated shipper.
